Williamsburg cuts out automobiles

The city will close Bedford Avenue to traffic, turning the thoroughfare into a pedestrian-only plaza between Metropolitan Avenue and North Ninth Street.

I’ve been waiting patiently for this since I started fantasizing about a New York City where all streets were replaced with sod.

Where are you watching the fireworks in NYC this weekend?

How to make jean shorts (jorts)

Email tip from Jessica Schroeder:

Try jeans on. Mark what length you’d like with a pin or little pen mark.
Take jeans off, lay on flat surface.
Cut straight across. Keep disconnected leg.
Lay cut leg on top of other leg.
Cut across at this point.

If you want them to be frayed, roll up hem horizontally so that all cut edges form a “surface”. Take a hair brush and just run it over that surface. This will pull out some weft yarns and let the vertical yarns fray out. If you can, throw them in the wash/dry and the fraying will really come out.

“Indian food wasn’t popular in New York until the mid-90’s when banks starting importing droves of Indian programmers to help them avert the Y2K crisis. Indian restaurants popped up overnight catering to the immigrants. Meanwhile, the tech scene was heating up in the city and a new culture of workaholics needed a late night craving satisfied via delivery.”

Indian-American entrepreneur Kay Kalawar explained this to me while lamenting that she entered the market too soon with her Indian food distribution company in the late 80’s.

Either way, thank god for chicken tikka masala.

So, I'm really into donuts...

I want to open a gourmet donut shop in Williamsburg. Usually I’m shy when people ask me what I’m working on, but that’s because I don’t like to mistake talking about something with actually doing something. However, it’s different with this shop. I consider myself a decent bootstrapping online entrepreneur, but I still have my brick and mortar virginity.

I seek a managing partner to help me open a shop, and through the process teach me the ins and outs of running a kitchen-based business in NYC.
